Baja Bound 2023 (Part 14)

By Simon J. Lau

Today, I kayaked through an estuary. It was high tide and we were able to paddle through what otherwise would’ve been impassable channels. There were a tremendous variety of fish and bird species, and it was neat to see them up close and personal.

Following our kayaking trip, we dropped by Punta Abreojos, a fishing town nearby, for lunch. My guide and host, William, has been visiting this place since 1979. He spent over a decade camping and surfing the beaches all along Mexico, and it was this beach and surf that he fell in love with.

Soon after, he realized that he would never find an American girl who would love this place as much as he did. Fortunately, he fell in love with a Mexican girl, married her, and raised a family. Although they moved to America, they visited often. They’ve since retired and have returned here permanently.

For my last night in San Ignacio, I returned to the city center to enjoy dinner by the plaza. In returning, I’m only realizing now just how beautiful and lush this place really is. It’s unassuming, but so charming! I’d love to visit here again.
