Baja Bound 2023 (Part 22)

By Simon J. Lau

Today, I ended my trip the same way it began, in Tecate. It’s a charming little town just south of San Diego County, and it was a nice spot for me to end my nearly month-long trip across this beautiful and desolate peninsula.

Crossing the border here was such a breeze! I broke Wilbur out of his pen, took the advice of locals on Reddit, and cut in line through a gap in front of the border crossing (intended for motorcyclists), and made it back to ‘Murica in no time! 🇺🇸 Door to door, it took me 15 minutes.

To break up the 10-hour ride back home, I booked a campsite in Bakersfield. It’s on an organic chicken farm with a man-made lake filled with minnows.

There’s also an adorable American Bulldog named Cleo that lives here. She and I have been inseparable. She follows me around my campsite and lake, and we even spent the evening on the patio couch. She’s so endearing, I love her. 🥰

Finally, I’ll be spending the next few weeks and months really taking stock of what I saw and how I felt along this trip. Although I haven’t fully digested this experience, what I can say for others is to not let work get in the way of living.

Have fun, get out, and explore!
