Exploring Oaxaca (Part 9)

By Simon J. Lau

We discovered this morning that my Airbnb host is taking care of a monkey while the owner is away. Generally, I don’t handle wildlife, but I couldn’t resist this opportunity. I’ve never been this close to a monkey before! She’s a spider monkey named Bonita.

In the afternoon, while walking around town, I found a vendor selling sweets. I had never tried this dessert before, but it’s called Nicuatole, a corn-based snack from this region. It was similar to jello but had a sweet corn taste. I’m so glad I tried it because now it’s my favorite dessert from Oaxaca!

Finally, we tried out Criollo, brought to us by the same folks who founded Pujol. I liked this place better than Pujol, especially their fish entrees and dessert drink. Too bad I wasn’t properly dressed for the occasion (I came in shorts and a white t-shirt. San Francisco has corrupted me.) 😅
