Mandarin Immersion (Part 9)

By Simon J. Lau

I made it to Wuhan! It’s a historic city and has briefly served as China’s capital several times. Unfortunately, it’s also where COVID-19 originated. 🦠 That alone may forever overshadow its long history. Time for me to investigate? 😅

First stop, Hubu Alley! This is one of the oldest streets in Wuhan, transformed into a street food paradise. I indulged in some delicious snacks here, including savory pork (pictured) and bubble waffle (not pictured). There’s still more I need to try, so stay tuned!

A dream of mine is to one day motorcycle across China, photographing and conversing with people in small towns and villages to document their way of life. The possibility of this adventure excited me every time I gazed out of my train window.

Finally, I’m very happy with my hotel this stay. Generally, when I’m traveling solo, I book the cheapest room and hope that there aren’t any bedbugs. These rooms, not surprisingly, can be bad. However, this is the cheapest room I’ve booked so far ($28 USD/night), and it’s the best!
