Coast-to-coast: San Francisco to Savannah (Part 2)

By Simon J. Lau

Today, we set out for Yuma, known as the “Sunniest City in the World” with over 90% sunshine annually. It also served as a crucial crossing point on many Old West trails. Upon arriving, I couldn’t help but notice the pride Arizonans have for their state, evident in the numerous “Welcome to Arizona” and Yuma signs along the way.

Before leaving Oxnard, I took Bruno out for a long walk around the neighborhood, and we ended up at the pier. There, we encountered a large group of sea lions. 🦭 Bruno wisely kept his distance, recognizing their size.

After, I stopped by the 24 Hour Fitness in Oxnard. I usually hate 24 Hour Fitness gyms, but this one has excellent facilities and is located just next to the pier. Thanks to a weight lifting class before this trip, I also had one of my best squat days in years, free from back pain!

En route, we passed by one of my favorite spots, the Salton Sea. 🌊 Ever since publishing an OpEd about it in the Los Angeles Times, friends often send me news or inquire about visiting. I’m always happy to be associated with such a unique place.

For dinner, I brought Bruno to Hooters, which had a spacious, dog-friendly patio. The waitresses couldn’t resist showering Bruno with affection. 🥰

Opting for affordable pet-friendly accommodations, I plan to book Motel 6s for many of my stays. Despite my initial skepticism due to its poor reputation and my lack of prior experience with the chain, this one wasn’t bad! It’s actually quite decent and conveniently located near the main drag (e.g., within walking distance of Hooters).

Finally, our route from Oxnard to Yuma (335 miles or 539 km).
