Coast-to-coast: San Francisco to Savannah (Part 5)

By Simon J. Lau

Today, we departed from Bisbee for Terlingua, a town located outside of Big Bend National Park. After speaking with Sterling yesterday, he convinced me to include this destination in our itinerary. The drive was intense, spanning the eastern half of Arizona, crossing through parts of New Mexico, and delving deep into southwest Texas. In total, it took us over 12 hours to reach our campsite, including breaks. These are some roadside photos that I captured along the way.

During our journey, we made several stops, with the first being in Marfa. This small desert town is celebrated for its art scene and minimalist aesthetic. It gained international attention as the backdrop for the 1956 hit film Giant, starring Elizabeth Taylor and James Dean. Subsequently, the town evolved into an artist enclave, featuring galleries, studios, and installations scattered throughout the area.

Just next to Marfa is Alpine, a town with very similar vibes. What I appreciated most about it were its colorful murals adorning its streets.

To wrap up, here are the last few photos from this leg of the trip.

Featured here are two coyote carcasses. I suspect the owners placed them along the fence line to deter coyotes from approaching the sheep pen.

Meet Mole (like the food), the camp dog. It took Bruno some time to warm up to her, but after the first night, they became friends. I suspect, like Trixie, the camp dog I met in Baja, Mole may have also been a stray in her past life. This morning, we found her waking up on a dirt mound outside my hosts’ home. She probably learned to prefer sleeping outdoors compared to indoors as a stray.

I finally removed the passenger-side leg canyon. Bruno kept falling in when I drove, so I packed it deep with stuff and placed my sleeping bags on top. Now, there’s no risk of him falling in, and he has a comfortable spot to rest his head if he chooses to do so.

Lastly, our route from Bisbee to Terlingua (590 miles or 950 km).
