Baja Bound 2023 (Part 16)

By Simon J. Lau

Today, I saw gray whales at the lagoon. 🐳 These whales come from Alaska to mate and breed in Baja, then return to Alaska for the summer. Despite being late in the season, we got to spend a great deal of time with a pair of mothers and calves. It was remarkable!

We also came across this group of sea lions sunbathing. 🦭 The colors, especially the background, came out particularly vibrant.

A lone osprey on our way to the lagoon. There are many of them here, and they often build large nests on the power lines and poles. Efforts are being made now to build extensions so that these animals can nest safely away from these power lines.

I also learned that unlike many other cities and towns I’ve visited so far in Baja that were founded by missionaries, Guerrero Negro was founded as a company town to service the salt mine. This is the greatest salt-producing mine in the world!

After the tour and upon returning to my hotel, I found Renegade waiting for me! What a sweet guy.
